  1. This is without a doubt one of the ugliest structures ever built! It was originally opened as J.B. Ivey's department store before being sold to Dillard's. Dillard's remodeled the inside but never updated the very unsightly exterior.

  2. I disagree w/ anonymous. Dillard's (Ivey's) SouthPark was without a doubt one of the most beautiful department stores ever built.

  3. It's more striking than beautiful, but agree with your disagreement :-)

  4. I disagree with your disagreement and cant_not said's disagreement. HA HA! Perhaps "unique" would have been a better word to describe Dillard's 1970's exterior. Dillard's must have agreed that it was unsightly though considering that they're completely remodeling the exterior. It's just dated. :-)

  5. Unsightly and dated, if you wait long enough, becomes retro and cool in no time. ;-)

  6. I really miss the unique architecture of the exteriors of department stores from years past. Everything now is just so generic.

  7. It's definately a different world in department store retail than it was a generation or two ago. Stores designed like this Dillard's used to be can't pass muster these days beacuse repliacting it ten times over would be rather expensive.

  8. It's a real shame this remarkably modernist exterior had to give way to the canned, columned, dry-vit covered, bland Dillard's box. Yuck.

  9. The original modernist architecture of SouthPark was patterned after North Park Center in Dallas TX - the Ivey's building included. The architecture of North Park is one of the most hailed and awarded in the retail world.

  10. I wish care could have been taken to preserve SouthPark's modernist exterior, but it was not to be.
