  1. Okay, Steven......what's the verdict? I haven't made it over there myself since the grand opening.

Thanks for the pics...I knew they'd be up on your page before too long!

  2. NM SouthPark lived up to my expectations. Very clean and elegant inside and out. It's a solid design architecturally, and it's as original as a mall store would be in that context. Except for the brownish brick which ties it to the current mall look, its design would have worked on either old SouthPark or new SouthPark.

It's a little small, to be sure, but they have a little bit of everything you'd expect from NM except for a café.

I really don’t buy a lot at Neiman Marcus. I treat it as something like a museum. You kind of can, because it’s got a lot of really nice things and usually a lot of art that was commissioned specifically for the store.

The Charlotte store even has audio-video presentations describing what you’re seeing on the walls, along with video interviews with the founders’ son, Stanley Marcus, who is one of my retail idols.

The men's department actually exceeded expectations. It felt roomy, and there was plenty to choose from including a full Armani shop and lots of Brioni. I wish I could afford to shop there all the time :-)

Overall, I won't be dropping my Nordstrom habit for NM, but it's a great addition.

  3. Neimans is so over the top. I used to work there (and boy, they pay well). I loved it and bought all kinds of chic things. I got caught up in the whole "mine is better than yours" thing. Now, I, too, look at it like a museum. Well, except the Epicure department. They have reasonably priced things.
This Neimans has stunning architecture. I love the modern building. I'm glad they are still into one-of-a-kind construction. The one I worked at in Palo Alto, CA was octagon.

  4. An Epicure department would have been great at this store. The only NM I've been to with one was the Chicago store, and it was a tasty and memorable experience.

I had no idea you worked for NM before, Scott. It seems like it would be a fun place to work if you like fashion. I've never seen the Palo Alto store, but I'll bet it's beautiful like NM SouthPark is.

One cool thing about how they do their stores is that each location retains a certain element of its original design even after it's been remodeled. It's less like typical retail design and more like architecture, which I love.

  5. Would you believe, in 1989, they paid $7.50/hour for stock?!?! And I only broke one $500 Bacarat glass (oops!).
Everyone got lavish gifts from me that Xmas.

  6. $7.50/hour was good, man. When I worked for H&R Block last year they didn't even pay that much in 2005!

I had an incident in Versace in New York a few years ago where I was examining a glass (apparently)full of water and gold dust and dumped the glass out onto the floor. Needless to say, I was escorted out. :-)

  7. How rude! Rich people breaks things, too! :)
What's with gold dust in glasses, anyway? It's a store, not a museum.

  8. I'm not sure what was up with the gold dust, but Versace is a far different world that we inhabit :-)
