  1. O'Neils was one of the earliest May Company aquisitions back in 1912, and the store company dates back to 1877, according to Wikipedia.

Before being absorbed into the May Company (Ohio) division in 1989, it had grown to ba a dominant chain in the Akron-Canton, Ohio area.

O'Neil's hada stunning logo, and after I found this picture at the RollingAcres.org site, I found a couple more modern shots that increased the completeness of the post.

  3. I don't know who's behind that site, but it's extremely impressive. Even though it's slowly fading away, Rolling Acres is loved by a faithful few.

  4. Love the logos! Now just a memory. I'm so glad they are preserved here!

  5. Check out the cool chandelier in the Kaufmann's shot. It's been there since the O'Neils wing opened in 1978. I was just at the mall and was sad to see it now has most of it's bulbs burned out.

This massive, once-thriving mall is now mostly dead. Now has anchors Macy's, JCPenney Outlet and Sears but little else in between. Dillard's and Target closed last year.

O'Neils was a great store. The grand downtown Akron flagship store closed years ago and the other 6 stores in the area are all Macy's now.

  6. That chandelier is the best part of that cuort in front of Kaufmann's. You never see lighting like that these days. I wish there was more of it in malls.

  7. Scott: If we can preserve even a little lost retail history so future generations can be inspired, then all this research is worth it :-)

  8. Incidentally, that script O'Neil's logo on the Rolling Acres store was the only time it was used on one of their stores. All of the other O'Neil's stores, which were built before this one, had a block letter O'Neil's logo.

  9. They really should have used it more. It's a beautiful logo.
