  1. Never heard of this store before, but this is a great photo!

  2. Those were the days. It's hard to imagine a space so clean and spare in a modern shopping center.

  3. The spare design is definately a clean looking design, that still looks relatively modern, I particularly like the bricked mall walkway. While some features would date the store today, overall it still has a contemporary feel that ages well. I say this is one of the better examples of an early post-WWII department stores, combining spartan with classiness in a way that is so rarely acheived without looking contrived. It reflects much of the eras optimism.

  4. So what happened to this Woodie's? I'm guessing the building is looooooong gone.

  5. I think the original building was demolished, but there is still a Seven Corners shopping center

  6. I worked at this Woodward and Lothrop (AKA Woodies) location from September 1976 until June 1984. When I worked there, the mall had been enclosed in an early 70's renovation and no longer looked like the photo above. Sadly, Woodward and Lothrop went out of business in 1995 and the Seven Corners Woodies building was razed (I think in 1997). The Seven Corners Shopping Center is still there (updated of course) but now a Shoppers Food Warehouse and a Home Depot sit in the former Woodies location.

  7. Sorry to disappoint, but that image is NOT from Seven Corners Center. The mall was always enclosed, with a center hallway upstairs and downstairs. The Woodies was on the east side of the mall. The image above has been misattributed as being the Woodies at Landmark Center in Alexandria, as well. Actually, the image is from Wheaton Plaza in Wheaton, MD, back when it, too, was an open air mall like Landmark. Please correct your tags/captions, etc.
